Grilled Feta Cheese or Feta Psiti

Grilled feta cheese dressed with colourful vegetables is a delicacy Greeks often enjoy when eating out at traditional tavernas. Some even make it at home. It’s a scandalously easy recipe that you can serve as a meze, appetizer or side. With a slice of fresh bread it’s also an ideal snack. What’s more you can even change the recipe at will.

Most Greeks would consider tomatoes necessary most of the time tomato for grilled feta. The same goes for green peppers – usually horn or chillies rather than bell peppers. It’s up to you to decide whether you want some mellow pepper or you’d rather some hot chillies.

Olive oil either sprayed before or after grilling is also a must.

You can opt to add some onions and garlic. You can also play around with the herbs. In most cases dried oregano is added but I often add rosemary if we have some lying around. It’s just makes everything very special. A bit of salt and pepper will also take you a long way.

You have to remember to slice your fresh ingredients thinly as your feta will grill for just a short time.

The serving below is ideal for a small meze for 2-3 people or as a snack/lunch for 1-2 people with some bread and salad. If there is more of you, just add more of everything.

A scandalously easy little Greek snack/meze/appetizer

Ingredients

  • 1 slice feta cheese, around 125 grams, 1cm thick

  • 4 cherry tomatoes or half a tomato, sliced

  • 1/2 green pepper, sliced

  • 1 tsp olive oil

  • dried oregano or fresh rosemary or thyme

  • salt

  • pepper

  • foil

Directions

  • Pre-heat your oven at the grill setting at 200C or 390 F
  • On a piece of foil large enough to wrap around your slice of feta place the cheese
  • Layer the tomatoes and pepper on the cheese
  • Add a small pinch of salt and some pepper
  • Add your chosen herb
  • Spray with olive oil
  • Wrap with for lightly and place under the grill for 10′
  • Open the foil and let cook for another 5′ until the feta cheese is golden and the vegetables start colouring
  • Serve immediately while hot and soft!
