This is our favourite snack. Cretan food is simple and based on the abundance of quality fresh ingredients on the island. So is dakos. It takes just a few minutes to put together.
Fresh, easy to make, filling, super healthy and delicious, this is the perfect summer dish. We often have it as a light lunch and our kids love it, albeit without the cappers!
To make sure you enjoy our salad to the fullest, the trick is leave your dakos to rest before you dig in. It just needs a minute to absorb all the delicious tomato juices and soften up a bit if you are using the smaller barely rusks.
Or, if you’ve got some of the big dakos rusk disks, rather than the smaller ones, rinse quickly with water, that’s the way they do it in Crete!
When it comes to cheese, we love this with all three cheeses mentioned here. But the easiest one to use is definitely feta. We always have a large slab of feta cheese in our fridge.
