Dakos Cretan Salad – A Taste of Summer

This is our favourite snack. Cretan food is simple and based on the abundance of quality fresh ingredients on the island. So is dakos. It takes just a few minutes to put together.

Fresh, easy to make, filling, super healthy and delicious, this is the perfect summer dish. We often have it as a light lunch and our kids love it, albeit without the cappers!

A traditional and substantial salad/snack

  • 100 grams barley rusks

  • 2 tomatoes, grated

  • 2-3 tbsp crumbled feta, katiki or myzithra cheese

  • 2 tbsp cappers

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • pinch of dried oregano

  • salt, pepper

  • Lay out the rusks on your serving dish.
  • Salt and pepper the tomato and spread over the rusks with a spoon.
  • Spread your choice of cheese over the rusks.
  • Sprinkle with olive oil, cappers ands oregano.
  • You are set!

To make sure you enjoy our salad to the fullest, the trick is leave your dakos to rest before you dig in. It just needs a minute to absorb all the delicious tomato juices and soften up a bit if you are using the smaller barely rusks.

Or, if you’ve got some of the big dakos rusk disks, rather than the smaller ones, rinse quickly with water, that’s the way they do it in Crete!

When it comes to cheese, we love this with all three cheeses mentioned here. But the easiest one to use is definitely feta. We always have a large slab of feta cheese in our fridge.

Success! You're on the list.
